Libraries and cultural organizations are out there breaking down barriers every day, improving access to their spaces, programs, resources, staff, and professions! Even with limited resources and staff capacity, they are figuring out how to make their organizations more accessible to their communities through ingenuity and collaboration and hard work. We’ve heard about, witnessed, and even seeded a few of these projects through our Ideas to Action Fund and we want to share their impressive work with you.
Please join us on Friday, February 24th at 10:00 am CT for our 2023 Member Meeting featuring the barrier-busting work of these member libraries and cultural organizations:
Adrienne Thunder, Program Manager of the Hoocąk (Ho-Chunk) Waaziija Haci Language Division, will discuss her efforts to support knowledge preservation and language revitalization for the tribal community using Mukurtu, a free, open-source content management system designed to support the unique needs of Indigenous libraries, archives, and museums.
Angela Zimmermann, Executive Director of the Racine Pubilc Library, will share the work she’s done at her library to create a more welcoming environment for all community members, including rethinking the approach to library security.
Deb Anderson, Coordinator of Archives at UW-Green Bay, will share her work on Our Voices: LGBTQ+ Stories of Northeastern Wisconsin, a community archive preserving these diverse voices through interviews and collecting original materials.
Dr. Kel Hughes Jones, Reference Librarian at Waukesha County Technical College, will share a pre-recorded presentation on her project Walking in Community, a virtual wellness and spirituality project geared towards uniting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) librarians across disciplines throughout Wisconsin and around the United States.
Following these presentations, WiLS staff will provide a brief preview of some of our work in 2023 that we are excited about, including data and research services, cooperative purchasing, community building, and WiLS’ Ideas to Action Fund.
Every day, we are inspired by our community of libraries and cultural organizations. We hope you’ll join us at our 2023 Member Meeting to share that feeling and perhaps even spark your own ideas.
