WiLS, home of the Mukurtu Midwest Hub, is excited to share that we will partner with Washington State University on its Andrew W. Mellon Foundation award of $1.5 million to sustain the Mukurtu content management system established in 2009.
The Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation at Washington State University develops Mukurtu, a free, open-source content management system designed to support Indigenous libraries, archives, and museums’ unique needs. Mukurtu’s cultural protocol-based and community-driven platform empowers communities to create their digital systems of cultural preservation and access in relevant and ethically-minded ways.
Since 2017, the Mukurtu Midwest Hub has provided support and training on Mukurtu to Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultural heritage institutions in Wisconsin and the western Great Lakes states. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funding will assist in expanding all seven Mukurtu Hubs and their service to Indigenous communities, and it will support training for more community curation specialists within Native communities, growing internal support for those using Mukurtu.
